Milo and Rozlind met us on their front lawn for our two o’clock group meeting. Both looked haggard and troubled, but they forced a brightness in their voices I could tell they didn’t feel.

“We’re going to work on communication and trust today,” Milo said.

“This should be good,” Lester grumbled.

I narrowed my eyes at him, but held my tongue. No sense antagonizing the surly fairy when I’d need to grill him after the session to see where he was when Ben had fallen through the ice earlier today.

“Gingersnap isn’t going to be scared, is she?” Pyra asked, the faux fur on her pink parka blowing softly in the breeze. “I’d hate for her to get scared and run away. She nearly did earlier when Ben almost drowned.”

“I wasn’t scared, you ninny!” Gingersnap, dressed in a matching pink parka, snapped. “I was trying to get help.”

“I can’t believe you made me come, Tori,” Ben said. “I should be back at the igloo resting after my brush with death.”

“It’ll be good for you, Ben,” Tori said. “Get your mind off what happened.”

“For this exercise,” Milo interjected, “we’ll need to walk down by the woods.” He took Rozlind’s elbow and gently guided her down the snowy path. “Be careful walking. There are bound to be some icy patches along the way.”

Zane and I hung back and let the others go ahead of us. Milo and Rozlind were in front, Ben and Tori next, then Wayne and Trinity, followed by Pyra and Lester. Pyra, ignoring everything Milo had just said, was busy talking baby talk with Gingersnap and not watching where she was going—which meant the minute she stepped onto the patch of ice, she flailed about, slipping and sliding and screaming. I lunged forward to catch her, but at that moment, poor Gingersnap flew out of Pyra’s arms and ascended a good six feet in the air as Pyra hit the ground.

Trinity whirled around, lifted her hands in the air, and instantly Gingersnap’s pink parka inflated, magically floating her in the air.

“Thank you, kind witch,” Gingersnap said as she hovered in the air. “But can you get me down? I’m feeling queasy.”

“Can you lower her for me?” I asked Trinity.

Trinity slowly lowered Gingersnap until she was near enough I could gather the adorable puppy in my arms.

“Give her to me!” Pyra yelled as she scrambled to get up from the ground. “My baby! My baby!” Pyra snatched Gingersnap out of my arms and nuzzled her neck. “Are you okay? Is Mommy’s baby okay?”

“On second thought,” Gingersnap said, “maybe you can float me in the air again.”

“Good reflexes,” I said to Trinity.

“Trinity is quick on her feet,” Wayne boasted proudly. “Always has been.”

We finally reached the edge of the woods, and we all made a semi-circle as Milo instructed us regarding our next session.

“This is a magical obstacle course,” he said. “The husbands will wear a Michelin Man puffy suit with matching helmet, and the wives will guide said husbands safely through the obstacle course. With it being magical, you never know where or when something will pop up.
